Trenta fotografie attraversano i cinquant’anni di carriera di Thomas Hoepker, dai primi incarichi come reporter per Stern fino alla presidenza della Magnum negli anni Duemila. Da Cassius Clay a Andy Warhol, da Cuba all’India, dalla moda alla guerra, dal quotidiano ai grandi eventi, Hoepker ha esplorato tutte le possibilità del racconto fotografico, proponendo in ogni epoca la stessa alchimia fatta di intensità e leggerezza. Le sue immagini vogliono intrattenere e interrogare l’osservatore, enfatizzando le contraddizioni e i contrasti delle scene rappresentate. Un buon esempio del suo stile è il famoso scatto in cui un gruppo di giovani newyorkesi si gode il sole di fine estate mentre, sullo sfondo, fumano ancora le Twin Towers, poco dopo l’attentato dell’11 settembre 2001: una sintesi perfetta di inconsueto e ordinario, orrore e normalità.
