A cosa assomigliano le cose una volta fotografate? Questo si chiedeva Garry Winogrand (1928-1984) mentre vagabondava per l’America del secondo dopoguerra e costruiva le sue immagini iconiche muovendosi invisibile tra volti, parate, marciapiedi, eventi elettorali e folklore locale. Leggero e drammatico al tempo stesso, Winogrand è protagonista di un’imperdibile retrospettiva al Jeu de Paume di Parigi, dove oltre metà delle stampe esposte sono inedite. Nel 1967, insieme a Lee Friedlander e Diane Arbus, cambiò per sempre la storia della fotografia con la mostra New Documents al MoMA di New York, sovvertendo in modo quasi scandaloso i principi del documentarismo canonizzati pochi anni prima da The Family of Man (1955), curata nelle stesse sale espositive da Edward Steichen. Winogrand immortalò una società schizofrenica, catapultata nell’esibizionismo più bieco (macchine cabriolet, elettrodomestici, parrucche e messe in piega), ancora preda di pregiudizi razziali e pronta a tornare in guerra nel Vietnam, a reprimere i movimenti studenteschi e le aspirazioni delle nuove generazioni. Con i suoi scatti ha rappresentato il sentimento di un Paese: non si è limitato a documentare, ha scavato dietro le apparenze di un benessere diffuso e ci ha consegnato una realtà cruda e sensuale.
