Fin dalla sua nascita, la fotografia non ha mai avuto una collocazione stabile e definita nel campo delle arti visive. La sua natura è sempre rimasta sospesa tra la documentazione della realtà e il confronto con la pittura. Un’ambiguità che con la trasformazione digitale ha ulteriormente complicato l’impresa di cogliere una possibile identità primaria dell’immagine fotografica. La mostra What Is a Photograph? affronta l’elusività della fotografia proponendo i lavori di ventuno artisti, dagli anni Sessanta a oggi, creando un catalogo virtuale delle varie forme in cui è stato stravolto il senso stesso della superficie fotografica, il suo rapporto con un referente nel mondo reale. La progressiva sparizione di una documentazione diretta, propria di molte delle immagini esposte, ci ricorda come qualsiasi fotografia, anche la più semplice, possa cambiare di significato in base a come la si guarda, perdendo quell’illusione di immediatezza che spesso è soltanto nell’occhio di chi guarda.
