Non ci sarebbe stato Weegee (il famoso) senza la Murder Inc., senza il Syndicate, senza il rumore delle rotative che ogni giorno portavano nelle edicole della New York anni Trenta almeno otto quotidiani. Aveva il fiuto della notizia, dell’inquadratura, ma anche degli affari. Fotografò moltissimo (oltre 5.000 omicidi, confesserà), scrisse altrettanto. Nel 1938, quando Orson Welles diede in pasto alla CBS la riduzione radiofonica de La guerra dei mondi, lui aveva già una ricetrasmittente collegata sulle onde radio della polizia per essere sempre nel posto giusto al momento giusto. Camera oscura nel baule dell’auto, era amico di Bugsy Siegel e Lucky Luciano, ma aveva buoni rapporti anche con il MoMA che acquistò i suoi scatti e lo celebrò in due mostre collettive nel 1943 e nel 1945, dopo la prima leggendaria uscita pubblica che Weegee curò per se stesso in occasione della Photo League del 1941, Murder is my business. Di lui dicono che abbia gettato le basi del giornalismo da Tabloid. Il giornalismo di allora è morto, di Weegee è sopravvissuto, oltre il talento, il mito: “Abbiamo bellezza e bruttezza: tutti amano la bellezza, ma la bruttezza permane”, affermava. Il cerchio si chiude.
