Nel corso degli anni, Thomas Struth ha esplorato una notevole varietà di soggetti: metropoli, paesaggi naturali, opere d’arte, figure umane. Distinguendosi dallo sguardo onnicomprensivo di Andreas Gursky e dal progressivo antirealismo di Thomas Ruff, entrambi compagni di studi alla scuola di Düsseldorf dei coniugi Becher, Struth evoca spesso nelle sue immagini l’atto stesso della visione e della rappresentazione, dedicando ampio spazio alla grande architettura del passato e a diversi musei nel mondo. Nella mostra alla Marian Goodman Gallery vengono presentati i suoi lavori più recenti, in due serie distinte messe a confronto: interni di infrastrutture tecnologiche e vedute panoramiche dei parchi Disney, nell’area di Los Angeles. La scienza e la tecnica come realtà tanto invisibili quanto onnipresenti nelle nostre vite, e i parchi a tema come surrogato materiale della nostra fantasia. In un’epoca in cui la tecnologia rende l’intrattenimento sempre più fisico e avvolgente, Struth cerca nei due estremi dell’innovazione e dello svago le radici dell’evoluzione della nostra capacità di immaginare.
