L’edicolante, il giovane lustrascarpe, ma anche Rocky Graziano, nudo sotto il getto di una doccia, avvolto da muscoli e fasci di nervi, e ombre. Kubrick prima di essere Kubrick era già Kubrick: il diciassettenne arruolato dal magazine Look per raccontare il respiro febbrile di New York. Gli anni vanno dal ’45 al ‘50. A documentarli sono 160 fotografie, selezionate tra le oltre 200mila custodite nell’immenso archivio del Museum of The City of New York. “Il reale va bene, l’interessante è meglio”, sosteneva Stanley. Se giocassimo ai “se”, ci piace immaginarlo oggi, alle prese con i sei secondi di Vine. Alle sue immagini non mancano il senso per il tempo, l’attesa, la storia, il movimento. Rocky guarda oltre. Sembra di sentire il rumore dell’acqua. Da lì a breve, Kubrick girerà il suo primo corto. Il resto è storia.
