Drawing inspiration from the structures of wine cellars, the Judith Benzer Architektur studio has designed a vacation home in the south of Austria (Burgenland) faced entirely with larch planks. Dual result: the house blends into the landscape, almost disappearing from view, and the wooden cladding protects it over the long winter, when it is empty. At the level of the windows runs a row of shutters that let in the light and, when half-closed, filter the summer sunshine. One side of the house provides access to the cellar underneath, built of raw ferroconcrete. On the other side there is an ideal extension of the house, with an outdoor paving again of larch planks. Almost a trompe l’oeil. Magnificent. (via Designboom)
