The new Birmingham Library, designed by the Dutch studio Mecanoo, regenerates the Centenary Square of the British city, enriching it and completing its perimeter, bounded by the Repertory Theatre, Baskerville House and, today, the library. An intricate filigree of metal circles, inspired by the industrial and jewelry-making tradition of Birmingham, covers every face of the building, making its profile unique and immediately recognizable. The memory of the structure’s history is represented by the Shakespeare Memorial Room, which is located on the top floor: constructed in 1882, it is still furnished today with its original wooden shelving.
