Peter Zumthor, Unterhus

28 February 2013

Exclusive and with a hefty price tag, it is intended for those who can not only afford it, but are also able to appreciate it. It is located at Leis, a hamlet a few kilometers from Vals (Switzerland), and is a vacation home designed by the peerless and multiple award-winning Peter Zumthor. Unterhus (this is the house’s name) is built entirely of wood, with large windows looking onto the valley and offering a view that is alone worth the journey—not a very easy one, you need to be highly motivated. In the fall of 2013 Unterhus will have a twin, Türmlihus, also available for rent. One sore point, the cost: 3500 Swiss francs a week and up.

She sits astride Italy, Belgium and Southeast Asia, and sometimes falls off. When asked what she does, she replies: I do things, see people. She has been writing about furniture for twenty years and is still not tired of it, in spite of everything. She has no free time, and is not even interested in it. For her it’s enough not to have to go to the same office everyday. She mixes with unlikely people, and contributes to Klat for this very reason.
