Kirkpatrick House

20 February 2014

Between 1955 and 1958 George Nelson, in collaboration with Gordon Chadwick, designed a beautiful and experimental house for James and Sarah Kirkpatrick at Kalamazoo in Michigan. Ten years ago, the house was sold to a new owner, who has carried out an intelligent and faithful restoration of the building, taking care to use the original colors and materials as well as furnishings from the period. The result is surprising, a plunge into the atmosphere of the fifties and a paradise for lovers of the work of the great designers of the period which does not indulge in any nostalgia, but on the contrary shows just how forward-looking the original design was. Kirkpatrick House is under the protection of the Michigan Historic State Preservation Office.

She sits astride Italy, Belgium and Southeast Asia, and sometimes falls off. When asked what she does, she replies: I do things, see people. She has been writing about furniture for twenty years and is still not tired of it, in spite of everything. She has no free time, and is not even interested in it. For her it’s enough not to have to go to the same office everyday. She mixes with unlikely people, and contributes to Klat for this very reason.
