Il punto per me non è disegnare una sedia che sia funzionale o un orologio che misuri il tempo. Il mio approccio agli oggetti che hanno una funzione è improntato alla massima libertà, così da consentire al mio lavoro di essere il più aperto possibile.

The point for me is not to design a chair that is a functional chair, or a clock that measures time. I approach objects that have a functional aspect with as much freedom as possible in order to let my work be as open as possible.

L’ultimo progetto di Maarten Baas si chiama The Empty Chair, realizzato per Amnesty International. Una sedia “vuota” in onore di Liu Xiaobo, l’intellettuale e dissidente cinese insignito nel 2010 del Nobel per la Pace. Premio che non ha potuto ritirare di persona perché in carcere a scontare una pena di undici anni con l’accusa di “incitamento alla sovversione del potere dello Stato”.

The Empty Chair vuole simbolicamente denunciare la repressione crescente di scrittori, giornalisti, artisti e attivisti.

La sedia-simbolo, alta 5 metri, viene presentata dopodomani, il 28 maggio, durante il 50° anniversario di Amnesty International al Pakhuis De Zwijger di Amsterdam.

Maarten Baas’ last project is called The Empty Chair, realized for Amnesty International. It is an “empty” chair in honor of Liu Xiaobo, the Chinese intellectual and dissident awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010. A prize that he could not pick up in person because he was in prison serving an eleven year sentence for “inciting subversion of state power.”

The Empty Chair intends to symbolically denounce the increasing repression of writers, journalists, artist, and activists.

The symbolic five meter high chair, will be presented the day after tomorrow, 28 May, during the Amnesty International fiftieth anniversary celebration at Pakhuis De Zwijger in Amsterdam.
