An exhibition that commemorates the beginning of the First World War with a wide selection of color pictures drawn from the most important campaigns of photography of the early 20th century: The World c. 1914 – Colour Photography Before the Great War presents a large number of photos from Les Archives de la Planète, the project initiated by the philanthropist Albert Kahn on the eve of the outbreak of the conflict. Kahn wanted to use photography as a message of universal brotherhood, to promote the image of a single people at the very moment in which war was gaining the upper hand. Alongside autochromes (the process patented by the Lumière brothers in 1903), the exhibition presents excerpts from the documentation of the German landscape by Adolf Miethe, who came up with the technique of three separate exposures, using for each a filter with one of the three primary colors, and pictures taken on Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky’s long journey through the Russian empire, employing the technique developed by Miethe.
