May Day Lamp, Flos
Konstantin Grcic

7 November 2013

May Day responds to a cry for help: talk about service design! A lamp inspired by the kind used in the workplace, by what are also known as emergency lights, it has a hook that allows it to be hung anywhere: under the hood of a car by a mechanic, on a trestle by a workman, on the stairs by a decorator. At home, May Day spans every typological category: it can be used as a hanging lamp, a table lamp, a wall lamp, even a floor lamp. It possesses the simplicity typical of the great masters of design, from whom Konstantin Grcic has learned the most important lesson: essentiality is not an exercise of style, but a condition of design. For this reason, even though a contemporary object, it was already, from its birth in 1999, a classic destined to last in time. And even the containment of its cost proved a farsighted choice. Extremely up to date. Manufacturer: Flos.

Domitilla Dardi

Torn between the history of art and the history of architecture, she came across design at the end of the last century and has not let go of it since. She loves to deal with everything that entails the use of ingredients, their choice, mixing and transformation: from writing to cooking, from knitting to design, from perfumes to colors. She is curator for design at the MAXXI and professor of the History of Design at the IED.
