Yesterday we bought in a second hand shop a series of 12 water glasses and a carafe of the 20’s, for 15 euro. The reason of such a good price is due to the imperfections of the glasses. All beautifully different, they have little production mistakes, differences in the thickness, imprecise engraved decors and little bubbles in the surface.  Our mothers who grown up with an enviable faith in modernism and the efficiency of industrial production, would probably (as the seller) hide them and their unpleasant deformity in the back of a cabinet.
We actually bought them exactly because of their imperfections.
Deformity has never been so well accepted as in these days or at least a lot of designers are enjoying the unpredictability of materials and their ability to be shapeless. Probably Gaetano Pesce has been one of the first who was actually going around telling people how democracy in design is not about delivering equality but diversity (also in terms of production) and promoting the expressive potential of deformity. In these days more and more designers are following his lesson. As much as we are all tired to buy paprika all of the same sizes, divided per colours and packed in little plastic containers (at list this is the way we find paprika in The Netherlands), as we do not want anymore to compete with the boring, unsustainable perfection of totally equals objects all standing pretentious as soldiers on the shelves of stores. Can we as humans compete with the efficiency of a machine? Is perfection still interesting in design? Considering the recent attitude of designers to incorporate in they’re projects hand made details, rough finishing and imperfections, the answer seams to be clear. The reasons of this new direction in design can only be imaged; maybe it is a reaction to the aesthetic of mass production and the need to re-introduce imperfections because they are able to evoke the human presence. We actually do not know, but if objects are able to visualize better than anything else the culture of a group, well then we can not wait to enjoy a society that is actually celebrating deformity ad un-perfection.
Did we pour to much wine in those glasses for water? Maybe, but today it is a sunny day so please let us dream!

Ieri abbiamo comprato, in un negozio di oggetti di seconda mano, dodici bicchieri e una caraffa degli anni venti. Il tutto per 15 euro. Il prezzo incredibilmente basso è dovuto alle loro imperfezioni. Tutti splendidamente diversi, hanno piccoli difetti di produzione, come spessori, decori incerti e piccole bolle sulla superficie. Le nostre madri, che sono cresciute con un’invidiabile fede nel modernismo e nell’efficienza della produzione industriale, probabilmente li nasconderebbero (come il negoziante) in fondo ad una credenza.
In realtà noi li abbiamo comprati proprio per i loro difetti.
La deformità non è mai stata così ben accetta come in questi giorni: molti designer stanno introducendo volutamente errori, asimmetrie, elementi organici e finiture grezze nei loro progetti. Le ragioni di questa nuova direzione nel design si possono solo immaginare. Magari e’ una reazione all’estetica della produzione di massa e al bisogno di re-introdurre negli oggetti piccole imperfezioni capaci di evocare la presenza umana. Osservando le cose da questa prospettiva ci accorgiamo infatti come, se siamo stanchi di andare al supermercato e comprare peperoni abbinati per colore e dimensione, impacchettati in contenitori di plastica (o per lo meno li troviamo cosi in Olanda), lo siamo anche di competere con oggetti insostenibilmente perfetti ed uguali, allineati come soldati sugli scaffali dei centri commerciali. Probabilmente Gaetano Pesce è stato tra i primi ad affermare l’importanza della deformità e del suo potenziale espressivo e simbolico. Per Pesce il design democratico non ha nulla a che vedere con l’idea di uguaglianza e ripetizione, ma piuttosto di diversità. Forse abbiamo versato troppo vino in questi bicchieri da acqua un po’ sghembi, ma effettivamente se gli oggetti sono la manifestazione visiva della cultura di un gruppo, bhe allora non vediamo l’ora di far parte di una società che celebri deformità e imperfezioni (oggi e’ una giornata assolata  quindi, per favore, lasciateci sognare!).
