Oggi che la plastica viene guardata con sospetto, vale la pena ricordare che c’è stato un tempo in cui veniva considerata il materiale su cui investire per il futuro, e che ha trasformato il nostro rapporto con gli oggetti di uso quotidiano. Tra gli artefici della sua storia fortunata c’è sicuramente Kartell, l’azienda italiana che ha contribuito a cambiare la storia dell’arredamento, introducendo la plastica in tutti gli ambienti della casa. Fondata da Giulio Castelli nel 1949, anche oggi che il legno e il vetro stanno riguadagnando terreno, Kartell mantiene ben salda la sua posizione di leader nell’arredo di design made in Italy. Il libro Kartell: the Culture of Plastics (Taschen) ripercorre la storia dell’azienda, dalla nascita alla guida di Claudio Luti, presidente degli ultimi vent’anni.

At a time when plastic is regarded with suspicion, it is worth remembering that it was once seen as the material in which to invest for the future, and that it has transformed our relationship with articles of everyday use. One of the movers and shakers behind its success was undoubtedly Kartell, the Italian company that helped to change the history of furniture, introducing plastic into every area of the house. Even now that wood and glass are gaining ground again, Kartell, founded by Giulio Castelli in 1949, is holding firmly to its leading position in the field of designer furniture made in Italy. The book Kartell: the Culture of Plastics (Taschen) tells the story of the company, from its birth to the management of Claudio Luti, president for the last twenty years.
